Rondel
The round garden of 500 m2 in the middle of the parcel behind the house is surrounded by a pergola, partly covered with climbers like roses, various Wisteria's, Clematis and Vitis.
The rondel has an architectural design. A system of walks based on two triangles divides the flowerbeds in workable units and allows the plants to be seen from close up almost everywhere. During summer the geometrical structure overflows with flowers like Achillea, Monarda, Phlox and Persicaria, in August/September assisted by Eupatorium, Aster and Cimicifuga. A favourite of Inez is Verbesina alternifolia which flowers well into October with interesting yellow flowers on two-metre high strong branches. Various Buddleja's attract clouds of butterflies and grasses give an airy touch.
In the sunken middle-part is a circular pond with a terrace around it, on which tubs and ornamental pots, filled with not-hardy plants find a sheltered spot.
Three trees, Phellodendron amurense, indicate the height of the garden-room and add to a feeling of security, as do the trees in the japanese garden and those on the lea.
Between rondel and japanese garden is a wooden screen, in the middle of which stands a bronze sculpture of Maïté Duval, a bust of a young girl. She moves us because she shows something of a frame of mind that reflects the character of the rondel. It is introverted, self-contained and yet open to the world.
