Arnoldshof
In short
Arnoldshof is a private garden with different elements: most parts are in a modern West European style and there is a japanese garden with a naturalistic appearance, based on the Heian-period, 9th - 12thcentury AD.
The different gardens are not like rooms strictly separated from each other, and have in common an open centre: a space in the middle. In the japanese garden that is a complex formed pond, surrounded by a path of stepping-stones. Walking around the lake there is a lovely view at every turn.
In the middle of the parcel there is a round garden surrounded by a pergola: the rondel. Here the open centre is a sunken terrace with a circular pond. This garden is filled to the brim by climbers, summer-flowering shrubs and many perennials. The joyous atmosphere is enhanced by Mediterranean plants in tubs and ornamental pots. Surrounding the rondel are borders with Hemerocallis, arranged by colour and interplanted with Veronica, grasses and other suitable plants.
Between the rondel and the house is the 'laar'. This is an old Dutch word for an open place between trees. An English equivalent is 'lea'. Here is a lawn with three big trees, surrounded by borders in warm colours.
Next to the garage a small courtyard is located with peonies, bearded irises, some roses and other summer-flowers. In front of our house is "The garden of the floating day", between house and garage the clapper
And here you can catch a glimpse of the makers and keepers of the garden.
