Hosta-1
A genus with many species, selections and hybrid-cultivars which gives us lots of reasons to use them. The natural variation is much greater than with Hemerocallis, but in the wealth that arose it is neither the colour nor the shape of the flowers, but of the leaves that is very different. The leaf colour varies from deep green to blue and grey, from narrow white- or yellow-edged to completely creamwhite or yellow. The shape can be very narrow, nearly round, cupped. The texture smooth, strongly veined or wrinkled. The sizes of the clumps without flowers differ widely: from about 5 cm to almost 1 metre.
What also matters is, that there are Hosta's for deep shade and for full sun. With respect to the type of soil they are not fastidious, but on a sunny spot the moisture is important.
On page Hosta-2 you can find a list with a brief description of the sorts we grow at the moment. For books, internetsites and nurseries, see: More.
